In this episode of Are You RV Safe?, John and Borgy guide our learners through crucial roadside maintenance and bush fixes that can keep any RV adventure running smoothly. From tools to tyre plugs and even snake bite kits, here’s everything you need to know to stay safe and self-sufficient on the road.

Essential tools and spares for your RV trip

John kicks off the episode by explaining the importance of preparation, particularly when heading into remote areas

Here’s a quick checklist of must-have tools and spares

Don't forget to bring spares, a torque wrench and belts to suit your vehicle.

  • Spare filters: Bring along extra oil, air, cabin, and fuel filters. These can be lifesavers if you’re driving in dusty conditions.
  • Torque wrench: Ensure wheel nuts are tightened correctly to avoid wheels coming off. Always tighten in a star pattern for balance.
  • Ryco catch can: This device helps filter out crankcase gases and prevents carbon buildup in your engine. Check and service it every 10,000 km.

Pre-trip maintenance

Tyre punctures can happen anytime, but knowing how to plug one can save your trip. John demonstrates this critical skill:

  • Tools needed: A tyre plug kit, drill, and tyre lube.
  • Steps: Insert the plug into the hole, apply lube, and withdraw the applicator. Reinflate the tyre and you’re ready to roll.
  • Tyre plugs are a temporary fix, so make sure to replace the tyre when you reach a service centre.

How to plug a tyre

Tyre punctures can happen anytime, but knowing how to plug one can save your trip. John demonstrates this critical skill:

  • Tools needed: A tyre plug kit, drill, and tyre lube.
  • Steps: Insert the plug into the hole, apply lube, and withdraw the applicator. Reinflate the tyre and you’re ready to roll.

Pro tip!

Tyre plugs are a temporary fix, so make sure to replace the tyre when you reach a service centre.

Regular checks help prevent larger issues on the road. Every day, ensure you:

  • Check wheel hubs and tyres for heat: If a tyre is too hot to touch, there may be a problem with the bearings or brakes.
  • Inspect under the vehicle: Look for loose parts, worn cables, or any leaks.

Snake bite kit essentials

A key lesson in this episode is how to properly use a snake bite kit:

  • Keep the victim still: Movement increases the spread of venom through the lymphatic system.
  • Apply a pressure bandage: Start from the bite site and work up the limb, using the bandage’s indicators to apply the correct tension.
  • Splint the limb: Immobilising the area is essential to prevent further damage.
